Reading regularly is a habit that is of great benefit with life-long advantages including: Improved communication skills – written and verbal An expanded vocabulary Brain development – Including memory Enhanced analytical skills Enhanced wellbeing Books make great presents and they are cheap compared to many forms of modern entertainment. All Year 8’ s recently completed a survey about their interest in reading which we are using to inform work in English classes, books in the Resource Centre and with our whole school literacy agreement. For the past two years our school has worked with Dr Rosie Kerin (Literacy Consultant) on literacy strategies. We plan on celebrating the success of all students that demonstrate improvement from their Year 7 to Year 9 results. The NAPLAN tests measure ‘ learning growth ’ or improvement from the Year 7 tests to the Year 9 tests. Hopefully through transitioning to online testing parents and teachers will have access to the student results in a timely manner so that the data can be used to support students appropriately with future learning programs. The Year 9’ s have patiently trialled the required software and are now ready to complete these assessments. As with any new process there are always challenges to work through and resolve. This cohort will be the first students to complete the new online tests. In Week 3 this term our Year 9 students will complete their final NAPLAN tests. An acting Arts and Community Partnerships Coordinator will be announced shortly. Dane will be taking Brooke ’ s Visual Art classes whilst Josie Turner will increase her time to take Brooke ’ s Year 8 English class. We have welcomed Dane Louis as a new Visual Art/Design teacher to our school for the remainder of 2018. Brooke has been successful in winning a regional Arts Curriculum role in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales. This term we have said farewell and congratulations to Brooke Garrett (Arts and Community Partnerships Coordinator) for a year. We are all looking forward to the benefits of our new learning spaces when this work is completed. Teachers and students have been very flexible and considerate of the challenges involved with this work whilst teaching and learning programs continue and our builders have also done their best to minimise disruption. ![]() Asbestos removal and demolition work was conducted over the April holiday break and our builders and associated trades are on site working in the Gym, Resource Centre, Technology Studies and our Year 9 Sub School. Term Two has begun at Banksia Park International High with the start of our STEM works renovations.
